Online Boutique Stores for Fans of All Things Handicrafts
If you couldn't tell, we’re massive fans of handicrafts. Luckily the pop-up market scene is prospering in Beijing, offering a wide range of artisanal products from kitchenware to handmade clothing, organic skincare treatments, and everything in between.
Most of the city's markets don’t have a set location or schedule and feature a rotating cast of vendors. That doesn't mean, however, that the knick-knack that you passed up last weekend is gone forever – many sellers now also have their own curated online outlets. Below are some of our favorite vendors, and links to their stores, so that with just a few clicks you can have beautiful, one-off ornaments and accessories delivered right to your doorstep.
Kitchenware
Authentic, special, and reasonably priced, the online store 不工手作 stocks a rustic range of kitchenware, including salad bowls, butter plates, coffee cups, drip coffee makers, mugs, and tea sets. All 100 percent handmade and microwavable, the store is also a great option for ordering last-minute gifts, with the option to tailor the gifts, for example, having the receiver’s name etched on a piece of your choice. Prices range from RMB 90 to RMB 300. Check their online store here.
Clothing
Mostly designed for women, Two States (俩样) offers independent, handmade clothing made from cotton and linen. Best described as employing traditional Chinese styles but not lacking a modern sense of design, the clothes are extremely comfortable and look aesthetically unique. Prices range from RMB 398 for summer skirts to RMB 750 for winter coats. Check their online store here.
Skincare
We use lotions, shampoos, and body oils daily so it's best to ensure what you use is both authentic and the best they can be for your skin. The Green Room offers all that and more, using only organic ingredients and natural methods of production. Prices range from RMB 88 to RMB 318. Check their online store here, or browse other organic skincare products here and here.
Souvenirs
If you've ever visited a Beijing art market, it's most likely that you've come across Liuba Draws. Created by painter and illustrator Liuba Vladimirova, her collections of doodles, prints, and accessories are rich in colors and detail, capturing the simple and best elements of living in Beijing, whether it's a corner jianbing stall or old people chilling in the hutongs. The fun designs are applied to magnets, keychains, mugs, totes, and more, making them the perfect keepsake or gift. Check her store here.
Accessories
Simple titled "draft," this store offers simple yet beautiful designs on everything from hanging pins, bookmarks, cutlery, wind chimes, earrings, and brooches, all handmade from bronze. Prices range from RMB 58 to RMB 320. Check their online store here.
