TGIF: Make the Most of Your Weekend With These Killer Activities

The weekend is here! Time for fun, relaxation, and recharging the ol' batteries ahead of *gulp* Monday morning's alarm clock. Luckily enough, there’s plenty of fun stuff to keep you occupied over the weekend that doesn't necessarily involve getting blitzed. Our TGIF roundup offers you some of the best.

Go to the Beijing International Book Fair

The 26th Beijing International Book Fair is now on! Running until this Sunday, the fair is a great chance for bookworms to leaf through gorgeously designed books, enrich their to-read list, and maybe do a little shopping too. With publishers joining from all over the world, the impressive selection also includes periodicals, newspapers, comics, and prints. Check our full preview of the event here. RMB 20. 9am-5.30pm. New China International Exhibition Center

Shop at a curated market

To celebrate their third anniversary, one of our favorite pop-up markets, Rumble in the Jumble, hosts a rather special event this Saturday, gathering makers, bakers, and crafters. Among many other things, they'll offer everything from vintage, antiques, jewelry, art, organic food, and handmade clothes. Additionally, there will be a booksellers section offering secondhand books. Free. Sat, midday-6pm. El Nido

Appreciate some great art

The Art Center at CHAO Hotel has just launched its latest annual show. Titled Ways of Seeing, featuring works from 17 internationally acclaimed performance artists, including art megastars Marina Abramović (pictured at top), Joseph Beuys (pictured above in his piece "Coyote"), Banksy, Ana Mendieta, Yoko Ono, Huang Rui, Xu Bing, and Wang Qingsong. Wide-ranging in execution, together the pieces goad the viewer to confront their preconceived notions of the world and challenge the power structures that constrain us. RMB 80. Mon-Fri, 1-9pm; Sat-Sun, 1-10pm. CHAO Art Center

Explore hidden independent boutiques in the hutongs

Autumn is almost here, which means it's time to update your wardrobe! Tired of shopping at the same, boring major brands around town? Why not step away from the malls and visit Beijing's smaller, independent boutiques for something unique, high-quality, and perhaps a little different than what you usually wear. Check our top five picks here.

Sit down and draft a plan for Golden Week

We know, there are still five weeks to go until the break, but it'll sneak up on you quicker than you expect – it always does. That's why it's best to nail something down now before you find yourself trapped in your apartment for a whole week come Oct 1. Check our travel advice for the break here. Trust us, you'll want to get out if you can.
