Previously Canceled ‘The Eight Hundred’ May Still Open This Year
Recently, Wang Zhongjun, CEO of Huayi Brothers, renewed hopes that Guan Hu's war epic The Eight Hundred will see the light of day when at the Yabuli Forum summer summit he said he was looking forward to its release by the end of the year. The film was previously set to open the Shanghai Film Festival in June but was pulled for "technical reasons" (notably, the same vague "technical reasons" that saw Zhang Yimou's latest film One Second withdrawn from the Berlin Film Festival in February). It is rumored that the film costs RMB 500 million (USD 80 million) to make and the cancelation of its release led to serious cash flow issues for its producer Huayi Brothers. Wang Zhongjun went on to reveal that he sold some of his collected artworks to help his firm get through this rough patch.

Ang Lee’s ‘Gemini’ to Release in China in October?
It is rumored that Gemini, Ang Lee’s latest feature film, has scored an Oct 18 release date in China, though an official announcement has yet been made. The film will be screened in 3D at 120 frames per second and 4k resolution in the North American market, where its release date has been set for Oct 11. If the film does secure a China release, it has been claimed that the film will get the same treatment in some Chinese theaters.

‘Nezha’ to Hit Cinemas in North America, Australia, and New Zealand
On Aug 15, American film distributor Well Go USA confirmed on Weibo that Nezha, the highest-earning animated film ever released in China, will be released in North America, though no official date has yet to be announced. The following day, Aug 16, CMC Pictures announced via Weibo that Nezha has also secured release in Australia (Aug 23) and New Zealand (Aug 28). ‘Killing for the Prosecution’ Scores China Release
Starring Takuya Kimura and Kazunari Ninomiya, the 2018 Japanese crime drama Killing for the Prosecution has been scheduled for Chinese release on Sep 6. This marks Kimura’s second film to attain public release in China, following Wong Kar-wai’s 2046. Based on the eponymous 2013 novel by Shusuke Shizukui, at the end of last year, the film ranked ninth overall at the Japanese box office.
