Cheese Offscreen as Well as On, Thanks to Cheese Home at Yoolee Plaza Cinema
What do you like to munch and slurp on at the movies? Would it be the old go-to, popcorn and a large cup of coke? How about a bottle of ice cold beer, a flask of baijiu, or just a bag of chips? If none of that does the trick, Cheese Home at Yoolee Plaza's theater is doing its damn best to broaden your silver screen snack horizons.
Expanding from its hutong digs to launch this small cart at the upscale Sanlitun complex, it's difficult to miss in the entrance of the cinema given its bright signage and generally odd selection of cinema snacks that include cheesecakes, Swiss rolls, and durian pudding (though we can't scoff at the more than a dozen kinds of coffee).
Their red velvet Swiss roll (RMB 35) was not overly sweet, but instead disappointingly flavorless and its topping of one blueberry and half a strawberry meant that it fell a long way short of Beijing's best. Also, the cake's swirl of white cream became pink before we could even get a chance to finish the roll due to the ample cake dye in the sponge, leaving us to wonder whether we should risk another bite.
However, the blueberry cheesecake (RMB 30) saved the day, thanks to its moist cookie bottom, a sweet layer of blueberry jam, and a solid and flavorful cheese layer. Additionally, the light violet topping looked the part and came bursting with blueberries.
All the cakes at Cheese Home are displayed in disposable paper boxes with plastic lids, which made them easy to grab and go should you be late for your showing. We saw several couples do just that, snatching up cakes and coffee at the last minute, before dashing into the dark screens of the cinema. While Cheese Home's desserts won't replace popcorn and coke as the classic theater snack, they made for a pleasant enough change for our movie night at Yoolee.
