Peng Sushi Brings Humble Japanese Fare and So Much More to Xinyuanli Xili

When you first pop inside, Peng Sushi appears to be exactly what you'd hoped for: a quiet, reasonably authentic, affordable Japanese joint on par with many near the embassy in the Liangmaqiao area, or in a few of the side alleys of Sanlitun. The ambiance certainly checks those boxes, what with the quiet, relaxing atmosphere, seats along a counter where the sushi is prepared, wooden trim along the walls, and more. And after you order and tuck in, it's more than satisfying in that regard – with assorted sashimi for RMB 78, sweet and fluffy California rolls for RMB 45, and beef udon soup for RMB 78, among others.

But step across the hallway, and you'll see a huge multi-purpose office and conference space, along with an all the more sprawling patio that spans two stories and boasts colorful, rectangular bridges stretching to a rooftop terrace. Around the corner is a Flatwhite Coffee kiosk and bakery, along with entryways to the neighboring new Bottega and Q Mex locations. Upstairs features a coworking space and boutique hotel rooms that ooze luxury.

The building's owners, who also run Peng Sushi and dine there frequently, say they want it to be a facility that suits nearly all lifestyle purposes. It's an impressive, and certainly surprising extension, from the humble little sushi spot we initially thought we were popping into. And that means that the neighborhood's throngs of office workers not only have a facility that meets many of their needs, but also a Japanese restaurant with solid quality at prices that are quite fair, all of it boding well for a part of town that is rapidly burgeoning.
