Special Screening: What’s in the Darkness
Institut Francais have a special screening of Wang Yichun's What's in the Darkness (2015), winner of the Best Director Award at the 9th First International Film Festival in Xining, China, and selected at the Berlinale Generation in 2016. The film details the story of a rape case in China in 1991, and how two policemen fathers, whose daughters attend the same local middle school, work on the case, taking different approaches to finding the perpetrator. The film is in Chinese, with English subtitles, and will be followed by a Q&A with director Wang Yichun. 7pm. RMB 20 (tickets here). Institut Francais

Kunlun Red Star vs Dinamo Riga
The third-to-last home game for Kunlun Red Star sees them going up against Latvian team Dinamo Riga. The Red Stars are only in their first season but are already turning heads because their great play on the ice, and is made up of world-class players from China, Russia, Finland, Canada, Sweden, USA, and Slovakia. Classic Movie Tuesday: The Ladykillers
In the depths of a cold, polluted, post-holiday Beijing, we all need cheering up. To remedy this awful malady, Pop-Up Beijing is happy to bring a barrel of laughter to Classic Movie Tuesday for all of January, to carry us over to the Chinese New Year break! YCIS Beijing Temple Fair
The first event of what is guaranteed to be many temple fairs, celebrate the upcoming Year of the Rooster with YCIS Beijing at the school’s annual temple fair. There will be a variety of vendors, from both outside and within the YCIS Beijing community, as well as martial arts, lion dances, and the shadow puppet shows. 8.30am-2.30pm. Metallica WorldWired Tour 2017
Metallica, formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, is now one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands in history, having sold 110 million albums worldwide while playing to millions of fans all seven continents. On Wednesday, they take on Beijing at the LeSports Center. While sold out, fans might get lucky as there are almost certainly guaranteed to be ticket scalpers outside. 7.30-9.30pm. RMB 480-2,280. Cristina Ortiz Piano Recital
Cristina Ortiz’ natural musicality, masterful craftsmanship and commitment to refined playing have ensured her a place among the most respected pianists in the world. Throughout her extensive career she has performed with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, and the Chicago Symphony, among many others. She has also collaborated with conductors such as Neeme Järvi, Mariss Jansons, Kurt Masur, André Previn and David Zinman. 7.30-9pm. RMB 50-480. National Theatre for the Performing Arts
 

Friday, January 20

CBA: Beijing Ducks vs Jiangsu Monkey King
Our hometown Ducks need every win they can get in order to secure a playoff berth. Standing in their way: Jared Cunningham (averaging a blistering 32.1 points per game) and the Jiangsu Monkey Kings. Tickets for the game can be purchased here. 7.35-10pm. RMB 60-900. LeSports Center (Wukesong Arena)
