I live in Baitasi: An Oral History on the Human Geographical Space of Baitasi Community
As part of Beijing Design Week, this series of special interviews initiated by Luminocity and Tongji University Press brings together scholars of various backgrounds and related media to interview different subsets of Baitasi's local residents. The interviews will be centered around numerous topics in order to lead a complete social investigation. The main themes are: history and changes of the human geographical space, the changes in family structure, in the residential spaces and in the entire community structure, as well as the local residents’ demands and expectations for improvements in their living conditions. 2-5pm. Imperialism, Opium, and Nationalism: A Walk and Discussion at the Old Summer Palace
The Old Summer Palace contains the ruins of Yuanmingyuan, one of a series of lavish imperial gardens destroyed in 1860 during the Second Opium War. Today the ruined pillars, foundations, and archways serve as a vivid reminder to visitors and school children of the country's “Century of Humiliation” and the tragedy of imperialism in 19th-century China. The Hutong's walk through the remains of the grounds will provide historical context for the destruction and how the memory of the events of 1860 continue to play a role in shaping how China views the world today.
