World Collapsing Upon Itself: Tuzki the White Rabbit WeChat Sticker Gets His Own Film
Tuzki (兔斯基, Tùsījī), the popular rabbit WeChat and Facebook sticker, is set to hop into movie theaters Roger Rabbit-style, it was announced yesterday.
Created by Wang Momo, a graduate of Beijing’s Communication University of China in 2006, Tuzki (pronounced Tuts-ki) has featured on everything from T-shirts to bed covers and pencil cases and has even been used in promotional campaigns for brands like KFC and Motorola.
Now Tuzki is set to appear as a CGI character in an otherwise live-action film.
Tencent Pictures and Turner Asia Pacific are joining forces to co-produce the film which will begin production next year in 2017, and expect to release it the following year in 2018. The Tuzki movie is part of a slate of 21 film and television projects that Tencent plan to develop from this year.
“Millions of young adults in China have used Tuzki’s unique expressions to communicate their feelings with their friends. Now, they can experience Tuzki’s story in what promises to be a remarkable [movie],” Tencent Pictures said in a statement.
Tuzki has become a surprise hit with millennials from all around the world – a rare feat for a Chinese brand. Much of his success is down to his ability to hop onto different messaging apps like Facebook and Kaokao Talk in Korea where he’s become a household name.
More recently, Tuzki has shown up in some animated shorts, a themed restaurant in Shanghai, a summer sports-themed exhibition launch at Chinese luxury resort Galaxy Macau, as well as making a big splash at the Beijing Comic Con in June.
