McDonald’s Unveil Green and Red Angry Birds Burgers, But Good Luck Eating the Latter

McDonald’s have joined the heat of the Angry Birds movie, releasing a whole Angry Birds food series in China, which runs until the end of May, and includes such eyesores as the Naughty Green Burger, Super Red Burger, Strawberry Pie, “Bomb” Bubble drinks, and various fried chicken options, presumably made from angry caged hens.

We ordered the Naughty Green Pork Burger and bubble drink meal set for RMB 28. The burger takes its rancid hue from the green pigs in the game and luckily didn't taste anything like it looked. It comes stacked with an egg, patty, lettuce and some mysterious green sauce. It actually wasn’t too bad, the pork patty flavored with ginger so as to appeal to "Asian tastes", but it was just too hard to look at, because it was just ... so green. Secretly I wish this one had come out during St. Patrick’s Day, to complement the city's green drinks.

The bubble drink reminded me of the ever-popular Taiwanese pearl milk tea (zhenzhu naicha), if you had gone and mixed it with Fanta.

We also tried their new matcha ice cream (RMB 5), which was excellent, and even better than the green tea cones at Wuyutai.

According to the ad, the Super Red Burger is a double chicken burger on a red bun. We visited three downtown McDonald’s in an effort to track down the elusive red bird burger but it had apparently gone extinct, as had the strawberry pie. At the self-service machines, it seemed that the strawberry pie was available, but having ordered it, the waitress asked me to exchange it for a taro pie, stating that it was “out of stock”.

I would say this whole Angry Birds experience left me with more disappointment than excitement, which may be a sign for anyone looking forward to the film.
