New Beijing Airport Making Space for Discount Airlines

Beijing's second major airport being constructed in Daxing County will include a terminal designated for low-fare airlines, a Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) official said this week.

"We encourage airports in big cities to build terminals for budget airlines," CAAC Deputy Director Xia Xinghua told Beijing Youth Daily. The new airport is located in southeast Beijing near Yizhuang. It is expected to open in 2018.

International budget airlines including Air Asia and Cebu Pacific Airlines already serve Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA). However, high fees their have been an obstacle to more flights and every passenger's favorite: lower fares. Earlier this year, JetStar, owned by Australia's Qantas, ended flights to Beijing, in part due to high operating costs.
