Community Matters: The Hutong Hosts Pop Shop For Charity
Last time I went back to the US, I shocked my family and friends by bringing back an over-sized, empty suitcase and stuffing it full of garments I hadn't worn in more than two years. "You're going to lug all that stuff back to Beijing?" they asked, exasperated.
They had a point – my slim, IKEA wardrobe was already overstuffed. But there's an easy, reasonable, even charitable solution to my frighteningly expanding clothing collection: the Pop Shop.
Tout your clothes and accessories to The Hutong Friday and Saturday for an opportunity to take off a load and bring home a second hand treasure for a small price (between RMB 10 and RMB 100). All proceeds go to 7 Colors Migrant School, and leftover items will be recycled back into communities that need them.
To improve your shopping experience, The Hutong will have food for a sale and a cocktail bar will be at your service. All Cash from drinks will be donated to the migrant school, so don't think you need to hold back.
Organizer Sophie McKinnon is still looking for volunteers to help out with sorting and selling, so even if you don't have clothes to donate, you can still help out. More information here.
