Talking Tunes: If Music be the Food of Love ...

... then tomorrow is Valentine's Day as La Fete de la Musique gets underway. Beijing Music Day kicks off across a bunch of venues in several areas of the city and features a ton of top local acts. Way too many to list here. Check out the details at their official website. One thing's for sure: Mademoiselle et son Orchestre will be busy. They're playing so many gigs around town tomorrow, they could called it the MesO Fest. Mademoiselle's round of shows includes Cu Ju's first-ever live music show, which makes a liar of famously anti-music proprietor Badr Benjelloun, who once vowed never to allow a musical instrument to be played in anger within the four walls.

You've caught me slap in the middle of putting your July issue of the Beijinger together, so this will be briefer than usual. But some very quick snippets of news:

  • Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) looks to be set to play China again, though he's flaked on us before. Let's just ignore him and see how he likes it.
  • The article linked to above also lends some weight to the rumor we heard a few weeks back that US rapper Pitbull could also be on his way.

Now to some of the weekend's highlights:

  • Rockland 10 Year Anniversary at Yugong Yishan should also be good tomorrow night (June 21), too, with a top lineup set to take the stage to mark the music shop's decade in business.
  • Sunday night (June 23) sees Shanghai rockers Duck Fight Goose performing at XP.
  • On Wednesday night (June 26) Mr. Graceless celebrate the release of their latest single with a show at Yugong Yishan.

That's it, I'm afraid – short and sweet this week.

Full disclosure: Badr Benjelloun is True Run Media's CTO. He actually rather likes music.
