Chill Cafe Bar: North Korean Libations Debut in Andingmen

First, the secret weapon: Chill is the only bar in town serving North Korean beer. The owners also hope to add DPRK-stamped liqueurs, but for the time being, the 640ml bottles of Taedonggang (RMB 45) will certainly draw curious customers.

The novelty of Pyongyang’s finest brew might pass, but Chill has other cards. A cocktail list of well-worn favorites (mojitos, margaritas, Long Island iced teas) emphasizes consistency and a generous pour above dizzying choice. And from Tsingtao (RMB 20) to Delirium Tremens (RMB 35), there’s beer to suit all tastes, although a few draft options would add depth. By now, the yard is a little too chill for comfort, but it’s flanked by tasteful, complementary lounges. On one side, a smaller private room with floor-to-ceiling windows. Directly opposite, another room houses the bar, sofas and a kitchen that will soon be turning out snacks and desserts including paninis, pizzas and Belgian waffles.

You could almost leap from a taxi on the Second Ring Road directly into Chill’s courtyard, and with Modernista, Mai and Wudaoying Hutong all nearby, why not do just that? A “Gulou North” pub crawl is starting to sound like a great idea.
