Something's Fishy: SinoScuba’s Shark Weekend Returns

Scuba diving operator SinoScuba is back this weekend getting Beijingers up close and personal with several species of sharks. They are also addressing conservation efforts aimed at keeping the bad-rap swimmers safe.

Those interested in jumping in with six types of sharks still have some time to sign up for the remaining spots. The Shark Interaction Program will be offered on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-1.30pm and is open to individuals age 10 and up. For RMB 650, divers will receive equipment, instruction, and a 40-minute (air supply permitting) guided dive of the Blue Zoo's main tank, and a SinoScuba T-shirt. Landlubbers can participate in the non-diving program for RMB 110. Reservations are required; either e-mail steven@sinoscuba.com or call 1861 113 3629.

Part of the weekend’s focus will also be aimed at launching two new shark conservation initiatives. In an attempt to get shark fin out of the kitchen, SinoScuba will start a discussion with Beijing hotel general managers whose restaurants are still serving the delicacy. They will also add a new course to their diver education offerings, a Shark Conservation Specialty Diver course.

Anyone interested in any of their efforts or learning to dive can check out www.sinoscuba.com for a lot more information.
