The Road to the Olympics

The Summer Olympics are just under two months away. While that still leaves plenty of time for us to decide on a bar to watch the festivities, it’s just about enough days for three Brazilian expats to drive from Beijing to London to catch the Opening Ceremony.

This Saturday (Jun 2) at the Bird’s Nest, Richard Amante, Edgar Scherer and Paulo Scherer will start the ignition on Thunder Love (a 2005 Santana) and start driving westward. Their planned route will take them through 25 countries, traversing 20,000km in 57 days. The trio are just the latest in a series of travelers who have made their way between Beijing and London using various modes of transportation. There have been several instances of people traveling by bike; one couple even managed to cooperate long enough to pedal the whole way on a tandem bicycle. In 2010, the Globe Busters London-Beijing Rally made its way en masse on motorcycles.

The Olympic Expedition lads are having a send-off party tonight at Temple Bar at 9.30pm. Drop by and wish the travelers bon voyage (and possibly win a T-shirt). If you can't make it out to Temple on such short notice, why not send the guys off Saturday at 10am from the Bird's Nest?

Over the next two months, you can keep up with the progress of Thunder Love and the guys on Olympicexpedition.com or their Weibo page.
