Beijing Then and Now: Julian Fisher

For our October Issue, we invited local personalities to recreate photographs that inspired fond memories. Here are the stories behind those snapshots and those Beijingers, in their own words.

Julian Fisher and a friend of a friend, The John Bull Pub, 2006

Julian Fisher, Casa Brazil, 2011

THEN

What year was it? 2006.

Where's the original location? The John Bull Pub.

Who is in the photo? Me and a friend of a friend.

What were you doing there? We used to go to the Tuesday pub quiz; it was the only one in town apart from Lush at that time.

What were you doing in Beijing? Uh... I think I mostly just sat around thinking about how I was going to become a millionaire.

NOW

Who is in the photo? Just me.

What are you now doing in Beijing? I'm currently trying to find a shop so I can sell vintage movie posters.

What has changed for you? I now host the pub quiz. Which has since moved from The John Bull, to Tim's Texas BBQ (old branch), to Sequoia (now a Brazilian place), to Schindler's, to Tim's Texas Roadhouse to Tim's Texas BBQ (up the street from The Silk Market). 8pm, Tuesdays.

What has changed in the city? There are less bicycles, and far less people who care about the Olympics.
