Gulou Personified: Biewutachu Store Is One-of-a-Kind
In Chinese, “bie wu ta chu” means unavailable elsewhere, and if owner Grace is referring to her wire-wrenching husband, she can put money on it. The DIY hole-in-the-wall shop is the spirit of Gulou personified: originality. Ethnic trimmings and vintage finds (from RMB 5-200) leave no space uncovered, but we suggest you scavenge for the couple’s one-of-a-kind creations.
If you're unenthused by what is on display, you can suggest a specific design or bring in a picture and it can be done. Grace is the ink-driven half of the couple – T-shirts and bleach-white sneakers are her canvas.
For a laugh, read her mischievous thoughts painted on cloth squares, or coax her into telling you a story about the copper wire handicrafts that her husband assembles outside the store. Better yet, ask the man himself – his heart-shaped wheels and coiled frogs are spin-offs from his own imaginative tales.
