Breakfast Epiphanies: Beijing's Best Brunch?
South German Bakery is a little like the city of Zion in The Matrix Reloaded. Stay with me.
Zion was the last bastion of human life in a derelict, grey world (i.e. Lucky Street) full of youngish people having a fun old time. Unlike Reloaded, however, South German Bakery is highly digestible, and there’s next to no chance of killer robot squid showing up and spoiling your brunch.
A successful brunch depends on a few things. Hot coffee arriving quickly, eggs with runny yolks, great bread and a buzzy atmosphere. All boxes ticked. Hungry? Try the “Franken breakfast” (RMB 72) with its trio of Nürnberger sausages, two eggs, a fabulous bread basket, sautéed potatoes and good coffee. Throw in a salty, chewy pretzel for an extra RMB 8. The “German breakfast” (RMB 72) is similar to that at Cafe Zarah – salami, ham, cheese, and a boiled egg – though the ratio of bread to goodies is a bit dough-centric. More cheese, please.
For high-rollers, the “Luxury breakfast” (RMB 120) is a Teutonic treasure trove of cold cuts, salmon, crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, yet more yummy dark bread, and orange juice. Brunching runs until 3pm daily, giving you every excuse to make an afternoon of it. And should you laze until late, forget dinner and pick up a big slice of German cheesecake to go.
