Hold That Plane: I'm Playing Pac-Man at Fuel Bar

The Langham Place brand is at pains to stress its technological prowess and the near-universal Internet access available throughout its plush hotel beside the airport. However, Fuel’s highlights include technological wonders from a bygone era. The bar features three tabletop arcade machines, each installed with an unbelievable selection of classic video games from the 1980s and early 1990s.

The beers are naturally priced in line with other hotel bars, from Beijing draft at RMB 30 to German brew Mönchsof (RMB 60). For a stronger drink, try the Cloudbuster (RMB 80), a lethal concoction of five types of alcohol, topped with pu’er tea.

The enjoyment of nostalgia-drenched joystick waggling is almost worth the trip alone. The team has clearly had similar fun creating the food menu, whose gut-busting rib challenge, tasty giant burgers and other interesting options made me wish Fuel was a bit closer to my place. I suppose at least Shunyi gets one more bar to shout about.

(Note: A 15 percent service charge applies.)

Good for: Delayed departures, retro gaming
Also try: The Green Cap, Pomme O’Shea’s
