An Inspired Move - Kamat’s Arrives in Dongzhimen
Picking a location can prove hairy for restaurateurs but Kamat’s move from Haidian seems somewhat inspired – what better spot than above a pub?
Their new captive market aside, Kamat’s cuisine is worth the trip to Dongzhimen. Pictures of India line the stairs, and bhangra hits drift from the speakers.
The restaurant has the expected spread of bhajis, samosas and pakoras (RMB 18 and up) for starters and a healthy choice of meats from the tandoor. The delicately spiced chicken and lamb curries include a vindaloo that is refreshingly light on potatoes and a solid bhuna (RMB 48). There’s also a lunchtime buffet (RMB 48).
Kamat’s adds something new to the city’s South Asian restaurant scene and better yet, you can enjoy the food downstairs in Paddy O’Shea’s.
