Hip Joints – White Rabbit
Baicai is one of the first dishes that fresh-off-the-boat foreigners learn to order. BaiCai is a crew of DJs and electronic music enthusiasts, bringing quality DJs that aren’t polluted by the commercialism of top fifty lists to Beijing. After floating around different venues like Bank and Alfa, BaiCai finally has a home: White Rabbit.
Rabbits eat cabbage. They're also known for leading little British girls into hallucinogenic wonderlands where woodland creatures alter their states by popping pills and smoking hookahs. A mild-mannered computer programmer called Neo escaped from his cubicle into a war of man versus machine by following the white rabbit.
I’m not saying you’ll find drug-addled madness or black-leather overcoats at this new club. You will get an experience that separates you from your life on the outside – or at least, that’s the idea. Follow an industrial concrete stairwell down to this underground two-floor venue. B1 finds a lounge for live shows. “I’ll bring in anyone I like,” says owner and DJ Tom Foolery, who assured me that he has good and eclectic taste. B2 is a spartan space designed specifically for DJs and all-night dancing. In a scene flush with stages for live bands, White Rabbit should be a blessing to local electronic talent, who, hitherto, had to hopping from disco to money-grubbing disco. Since the very beginning, BaiCai’s policy has been no cover before 11pm (barring international DJ shows). Look for the same welcoming arms at their new headquarters.
Swing by the soft opening on September 21 for some drum and bass care of the Syndicate, and BaiCai boys Ludo V and Patrick Yu on the main floor.
