decent camera shop?

What's the cheapest place to buy decent camera equipment? I'm specifically looking for a tripod for my Canon but maybe a lens too if the price is right. I've seen quite a few shops around but I absolutely hate the bargaining especially since I've been stressed out with work in here. Thanks!

Re: decent camera shop?

Our photographers recommended Wu ke Song market.

Re: decent camera shop?

Ray! camera is a rather nice shop located in SOHO Newtown AKA Xiandai Cheng. It caters slightly to the high end but the staff is friendly and knowledgable. Their prices are pretty fair and while you -could- pay less if you bargained elsewhere you at least know what the prices are ahead of time at Ray! as their website includes a comprehensive listing of their inventory.

I bought a Nikkor lens there and a couple filters. One of the filters completely broke while on vacation. They replaced it with no hassle.

There's also a very professional camera equipment store by the National Art Museum of China. Can't remember its name, but if you head east of the gallery's main entrance and turn north at the first intersection (Meishuguan Dongjie) and then turn into the second small street on your right - it's just past the entrance to the Sanlian Bookstore.

Re: decent camera shop?

I concur on Ray. Have bought 5 cameras there now (2 DSLRs, 3 compacts) and have been generally happy with pricing (usually bottom ten percent of what is available from Camera City or Haidian after 3 hours of store visits and haggling). Particularly pleased that all pricing is clear on the Internet before you go to the store with no haggling in the shop. But note that, as with Haidian, prices are higher for anything that is just out. So don't expect great value on the new Nikon D90 or the expected Canon G10 until at least three months after they are out in Beijing.

I look forward to taking a look at the store near NAMOC, though. Always good to have choices.

Re: decent camera shop?

I tried Ray! Camera in Soho Newtown and it was the worst camera shopping experience I ever had (and I was dressed decently!). The salesman wasn't at all knowledgeable and seemed pretty bored with it all. Prices were pretty much around the manufacturer's suggested price and equipment was very limited. In contrast, the salesman in the shop I finally decided to buy my equipment at camera city in Wu Ke Song, was knowledgable, eager to make a sale with some negotiation, carried an inventory of cameras and accessories that was very extensive. I did a lot of comparison shopping there and found some major differences in pricing. So, it pays to be cautious. By the way, there isn't much price elasticity with high-end camera bodies. The differences from dealer to dealer were what you could get the shop to 'throw in" as an enticement (like a camera bag, lens hood, extra battery, etc)for you to buy from them.

Life is either a daring adventure or a walk in the park
