Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

The gold-medal game will be the last Olympic softball game until at least 2016; the sport was dropped from the program effective after the Beijing Games. The International Olympic Committee contended that the sport had not grown sufficiently internationally, but it was surely influenced by the dominance of the United States at the highest level.

I would assume that other teams are suppose to rise to the occassion to beat the dominate player. Isn't that the bases of competition? Isn't that what makes us strive to excel even in the face of adversity?

So if we follow the logic of the IOC, shouldn't table tennis also be dropped?

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

There is some logic to how the sports are chosen?

Well that's news to me. I thought they just got drunk and chose names from a hat marked "obscure sports that might look good on the telly"

And oh no, what are all those young Chinese girls going to do that are currently practicing softball 10 hours a day at the softball training school?

The "sports" at the Olympics are crap crap and more crap.

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

Half the sports in the Olymnpics should be scrapped

Air guns? Dressage? Competitive walking? FFS!!!

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

Table tennis is quite popular in Europe, especially the Scandinavian countries. between there and Asia, I'm sure it's got a hell of a lot more audience than handball, which I play and enjoy, but nobody seems to know.

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

Does anyone know what the criteria is for inclusion?

I don't see the difference between shooting and darts, except that darts is more popular.

WOuldn't you just love to see this guy representing his country?

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

Yikes....

I didn't even know Ping Pong was an Olympic sport until last year. I think its a joke really- Has any non-Asian country won medals??? Just curious...

Whatever

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

It's no more ridiculous than having synchronized swimming as an Olympic sport. Ping pong is actually quite popular in a number of countries...certainly more popular than softball (outside of the US).

Cheers,

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

Agreed-although softball is actually very popular in a couple of countries-I know it is in NZ and I think it is in Canada too, as a Canadian friend of mine was a good player-

love pitching in softball, it's such a great feeling when you get it right.

Table tennis is as someone

Table tennis is as someone stated very popular in Europe and Asia (and not just China,, Korea, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand have great players). It is not as dominated by the Chinese as one mihgt think, German Timo Boll and Swede Jan Owe Waldner were the best in the world for several years,, I think Boll is still playing but not sure.

There are worse "sports" than table tennis though,, the walking and synchronized swimming,, ridiculous and laughable events imo. Dressage too. I didn't even know baseball was an olympic event, I watch as much of the olympics as I can and I have never even seen fotage from that 2008 or before, but I can relate to americans thinking it's wrong to remove it considering the history of baseball in USA. Not a world sport though. Where is karate? I know a couple of people who are practising it and as far as I know its widely popular and wellknown all over the world (more than Judo and taekwondo which are included in the games). Id love to see rugby or underwater rugby (underwater cameras, wow,, some spectator sport)in the Olympics too. Might be hard to squeeze 5-6 rugby games into 3 weeks but I think it is more popular than baseball,, and hell,, everything is more popular than synchronized swimming.

Nobody is going to need to check their passport to know they are over 16. Smile I see your point, perhaps the removal of synchronized swimming is going to need more careful review.

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

sports like the discus, the hammer throw and the steeplechase seem to me to be far more irrelevant than table tennis and baseball.

If it were up to me though I'd remove all team sports. Make it all about individual pursuit.

another theory is to ditch all sports that have a competitive world tournament elsewhere. Therefore goodbye football and tennis

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

I just skimmed through the IOC charter and can find nothing on either how sports are chosen, or the criteria they are measured against for continuation.

Does anyone else know?
IT must be written down somewhere surely.

my bet is that Badminton, Baseball, Beach Volleyball, Canoe/Kayak, BMX Cycling, Handball, Softball, Synchronized Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Trampoline and Water Polo would all fail the "widely practised in at least 75 countries" test

By that definition, tossing off ought to be a sanctioned event. Even the kiwis could participate...so long as there were pictures of sheep on the walls. Smile

But seriously...I think the idea of team sports being punted is a good one.

I can't believe they got rid of the tug-of-war.

Tug-of-war

Tug-of-war was on the Olympic programme in 1900, 1904, 1906 (Intercalated Games), 1908, 1912 and 1920. Tug-of-war was always contested as a part of the track and field athletics programme, although it is now considered a separate sport. The Olympic champions were as follows: 1900: a combined Swedish/Danish team; 1904: an American club team representing the Milwaukee Athletic Club; 1906: Germany/Switzerland; 1908: a British team from the City of London Police Club; 1912: Sweden; and 1920: Great Britain.

And yes, there is an International Tug-of-War Federation:

Life Saving is also a recognized "sport" by the IOC

http://www.olympic.org/uk/sports/recognized/index_uk.asp

Although this would be pretty dramatic to watch, I'd hate to be the "ball" in Life Saving ...

i wonder how many Olympic volunteers would want the job of drowning victim for that event ...

So which is it, 75 or 50 countries; three continents or four? These rules seem to be saying two different things, unless the difference here is between "sport/discipline" and "event". Also, there is no definition of "widely". There's probably a bit of politicking that goes on for adding sports, just as there is for cities trying to host.

As for ping pong, of course it should be an Olympic sport! It's one where China dominates and that in itself means it must be included. Gotta keep the medal count up!

But if ping pong is an Olympic sport, should not other basement games, like darts, billiards and foosball also be added?

And I wonder why golf isn't on the roster. Surely golf is more widely practiced than synchro swimming and trampoline...

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

I think a sport, essentially by definition, is supposed to have a definitive winner and loser. If it is required that someone has to tell you who looked best doing something, that is not a sport, that is a pageant or exhibition, not a sport. If I need someone's opinion to know who won-not a sport.

And lets be honest, the great majority of judges are probably female or homosexual. I am just saying. Now, I have nothing against homosexuals (I am not here to judge, after all) but my opinion of what looks good and a homo's might be completely different. And I have no clue about women.

Do you ever see Chinese kids play 75% of the sports in which China has won medals?

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

I do see American kids play 75% of the sports in which the US has won medals either--all swimming:) so I suggest the IOC should only keep swimming and kick out all other games that China has won gold medals.

I'm not sure if you made a grammatical error or what, but there are a lot more Americans interested by their own choice in Olympic sports than there are Chinese.

by their own choice? what do you mean? you mean Chinese athletes have no rights to choose what they are interested no matter whether or not they have talents or sth? LOL FINE. keep whining. I am going to watch baseball final now. say goodbye to the beautiful game.

Yes...that is exactly what he meant

Especially with gymnastics and diving - if the govt here believes there is potential within a certain kid, they'll take him/her away and train them for future Olympics - but hey...at least they ask for the parents' permission...that counts for something

Silly me! I have been told for 8 years that Taiwan is China. Shows what a fool I am to listen to Chinese people. The boys on Taiwan play baseball on par with the boys of the same age as Americans. Never again will I listen to anyone that Taiwan is, Thank you beijingcat.

Re: Should table tennis/ping pong be an olympic sport?

All the professional Chinese athletes (including two 2008 Olympians and one who was on the 1984 Olympic team) I know are not gymnasts.

Also, in addition to the "eek foreigner" boundary, I'm also an adult and staff, so the few gymnasts who eat in the same cafeteria I do are unlikely to come over and talk to me.

The athletes that I am friends with chose to go into sports. In one man's case his family saved up quite a lot of money to send their unusually large and strong son to a local county-level sports academy in the dream that he might one day be a high school gym teacher. From there he went to the provincial sports academy and eventually the right sport (ie - one in which he could win stuff for China) was found for him before he got too old.

Another way up is for a teacher to notice that a kid is unusually strong or unusually flexible for their age and suggest that they go to a sports academy.

My coworker who used to do the long jump was found by a coach that liked to check out the kids playing games of basketball.

There's a lot of negative sh*t done, but I'd hardly say that they are 1970s style stealing the kids away from their parents and forcing them to train.
