We are currently in the middle of a cycle covering movies where the city takes one of the main roles of the film. Cinema and urbanization have developed concurrently, and to some, cinema became the medium best expressing the experience of modernity as it unfolded in its many-faceted ways across cities and communities all over the globe. Can we relate to the streets of these films? Does the story capture the ways a city's character shapes our actions? Join us each Sunday at 5pm as we screen films that we believe have something to say, then stay afterwards and say something about them.
We have previously screened Jim Jarmusch’s « Night on Earth », and Woody Allen’s « Manhattan ». The next movie will be « Beijing Bicycle » by director Wang Xiaoshuai, which came out in 2001 to critical acclaim. On the January 21st, we will continue with « The Third Man », an arresting thriller in post-war Vienna featuring among others Orson Welles. And we conclude January’s cycle with Wim Wenders’ 1987 « Wings of Desire » as it takes through Berlin pre-reunification on the last Sunday of January.
The following cycle has yet to be defined precisely but it will focus on Chinese cinema.
- Jan 14th: Beijing Bicycle (2001)
- Jan 21st: The Third Man (1949)
- Jan 28th: Wings of Desire (1987)
