There is a handful words that could be used to describe the work of UK deep-techno stalwart Ø [Phase] AKA Ashley Burchett: Precise, magisterial, purposeful and professional.
For almost two decades now, the mastering engineer-turned-DJ/ producer has been crafting functional and hypnotic techno and gritty minimal that veers seamlessly between the propulsive and the abstract. In 2000 he released his debut “Module Overload” on Steve Bicknell’s Lost/Cosmic Record, which was followed by a string of productions. Ø [Phase] largely pushed a fast-paced, rolling sound, one that often evokes the more shadowy corners of Jeff Mills’ Purpose Maker series.
He started working with revered Belgian label Token in 2007. In 2012 Token marked its fifth birthday with Ø [Phase]’s relentless “Binary Opposition” EP, a release that got remixed later by an eye-catching selection of modern techno’s finest – Ben Klock, Peter Van Hoesen, Planetary Assault Systems, Sigha. In 2013 he released a much-acclaimed debut LP “Frames of Reference”. His tracks have become constants in the DJ sets and podcasts of Marcel Dettmann, James Ruskin, Robert Hood, Ben Klock, Rødhåd, Dave Clarke and many more. After releasing his 2nd album “Alone In Time?” in 2015 he consolidated his position as one of the most important representatives and developers of the current London Techno sound, running from delicate intensity through to full-bore attack mode.
Today his schedule is busier than ever. Over the last years he played an average of 70 gigs per year. 2017 marked his tenth year working with Token. With his 'Boundary Interactions' EP released on the label this March, now it is the right time for him to make a China debut.
