Szilvia Sydonia Pap

"With music it all started as my parents and adults started asking me what I wanted to be so jumping on top of my brother's bed singing aloud in a deodorant bottle, I very confidently claimed that I would be a singer... I was only 5 years old then. "

I was born in on April 21 in 1981 in Hungary in Middle-East Europe, a country of extremely rich music cutural roots. In my extended family lived a whole generation of musicians of all sorts of instruments, they were my uncles. In the family band there were clarinettist, accordion player, drummer, saxophonist etc. My great-grand father was a first violinist as we say it in Hungary, a virtuoso "prímás".

Then my parents took my to the local music elementary school in my hometown, Kiskunfélegyháza. When I turned 8, I stated playing the violin, however my very first instrument was the flute. I used to play any melody I heard from TV series or commercials . My music education was based on solfeig and solmization developed by our world famous composer, Zoltán Kodály. My first songs were Hungarian folk songs which I either sang or played on flute or the violin. It is still a pleasure for me to perform those precious songs which taught me music.

I continued my studies in the Conservatoire of Kecskemét named after Zoltán Kodály where I already actively sang in the school choir, La Campanella, with which we won first prize at the international choral competition in Budapest in 1997 and gave several successful concerts in Germany between 1995 and 1999.

After graduation I ended up in playing small roles at the National Theatre of Szeged, a nearby town where I attended university. I also had the chance to sing at the Ennio Morricone concert in 2002.

In Szeged I took singing lessons at the Music College and at the theatre. After some up and downs I found myself in Budapest singing more and more solo parts in a church choir until last year when I performed the soprano solo of the beautiful barroque piece, G.B. Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. Several appearances followed the successful show, one of them was a finalist performance of some Hungarian musical poems at a competition which took place at the National Theatre of Budapest.

The story continued in Beijing in 2015, when I accepted an English drama and music teacher position in China. I am currently a member of the International Festival Choir of Beijing, Jing Sing a capella band and I am also experimenting with contemporary music on own poems and lyrics accompanied by local musicians. I usually proudly talk about my hobby, dancing and my special interest in foreign languages, and that I sing in 8 of them.
