After the chaos of the Mao era, China entered the 1980s as an impoverished backwater, struggling to escape political turmoil and economic mismanagement. Today it is the world’s second biggest economy, the largest manufacturing and trading nation, the consumer of half the world’s steel and coal, the biggest source of international tourists, and one of the most influential investors in developing countries from Southeast Asia to Africa to Latin America.

How did China manage to grow so fast for so long? Can it keep growing and still solve its problems of environmental damage, fast-rising debt and rampant corruption? How long can its vibrant economy co-exist with the one-party state? And what do China’s changes mean for the rest of the world?

The EU Chamber is delighted to welcome Mr Arthur Kroeber, Gavekal’s head of research and founder of the Dragonomics service, to introduce some of his key research underpinning his recently published book. Mr Kroeber will bring his trademark clear thinking and lucid expression to unpick the driving impetus of the Chinese development story.

After outlining some of his key arguments and predictions, Mr Kroeber will field questions from our members.

Breakfast will be served at the event. Please note as a breakfast seminar seating is limited. We encourage you to sign up early to guarantee your place.
