For more than 50 years, Silicon Valley has remained the global epicenter of technological innovation. Almost all of the major disrupters of the last several decades (Intel, Apple, Oracle, Salesforce, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Tesla, Uber, Airbnb and many others) were founded in Silicon Valley. Importantly also, Silicon Valley is becoming stronger, not weaker, over time. Companies and policy makers around the world are seeking to emulate or recreate the Silicon Valley experience in their local area. But is this possible? How can it be done? This event, organzed by the Financial Times Chinese edition, will expolore these questions.

Professor Anil K. Gupta of Maryland University will discuss what makes Silicon Valley what it is (its “DNA”), how Silicon Valley is changing, and whether or not the Silicon Valley phenomenon can be replicated in other locations such as Beijing, Shenzhen, Bangalore, London, Berlin, or Singapore.

He will later be joined by other tech business experts in a panel discussion and Q&A session.

Speaker: Professor Anil K. Gupta, holder of the Michael Dingman Chair in Strategy and Globalization at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Professor Gupta is a strategic management and globalization expert. He is ranked by the London-based Thinkers50 as one of the world’s “50 most influential living management thinkers” and has been named by The Economist as one of the world’s “superstars” in a cover story on “Innovation in Emerging Economies.”

A member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Emerging Multinationals, he has served on the boards of several NYSE- and NASDAQ-listed companies in the United States and as chief advisor to The China India Institute. Gupta is also a columnist for Bloomberg Business Week, contributing editor for Chief Executive magazine and contributor to the Harvard Business Review.

Mr. Bing Chung Tam, also known as Benson, is the Founder and Chairman of the Venturous Group. Venturous is a China-based global-focused “CEO think tank & smart network”. Currently, Venturous has a member network with over 800 CEOs and industry experts from places including Silicon Valley, Beijing, Hong Kong, London, and Singapore. It covers industries such as TMT (technology, media, telecom), healthcare and finance. Tam holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Imperial College of London as well as a Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence from Oxford University.

Panelist: Dr. Can Huang, Professor of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy, and Co-Director of the Institute for Intellectual Property Management at the Zhejiang University School of Management.

Dr. Huang is a member of the advisory boards of several research centers, including the Research Center for Technological Innovation at Tsinghua University. He is member of the editorial advisory boards of Oxford’s Science and Public Policy, the NTUT Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Management, the African Journal of Science, Technology, Innovation and Development, and the UNESCO Science Report (2015 Edition). He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial Management from the University of Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal, an M.S. in Engineering and a B.A. in Economics from Renmin University of China, Beijing, China.
