Set in a traditional-looking two-story building beside the west gate of Tuanjiehu Park, Yuan Yuan represents a Shanghai chain that is best known for its hongshao rou (red-cooked pork). This dish, which won the Golden Chopsticks award in the 2006 Shanghai New Cuisine competition, does not disappoint – the caramelized sauce is glossy and you can hardly wait to dig in.

Other recommended dishes include the jinpai zhu gansi (金牌煮干丝), shredded tofu braised in tasty chicken broth, and the jicai rousi chao niangao (荠菜炒年糕), with the chewy texture of glutinous rice cake. Yuan Yuan also offers a gamut of scrumptious cold appetizers to choose from: yecai ban xianggan (野菜拌香干), a wild vegetable mixed with beancurd and dressed in sesame oil; xiangxi lugan ban huasheng (香茜卤干拌花生), a mixture of Spanish peanuts, braised beancurd and cilantro; benbang su ya (本帮素鸭), the famous vegetarian “duck” made with stacked, pressed beancurd sheets; and hupi chou doufu (虎皮臭豆腐), deep-fried stinky beancurd that is fried and served with chilli sauce.
