Catch the Beijing Broads’ First Show of 2024 This Saturday!

Everyone’s favorite improv ladies, the Beijing Broads, are back with their first show of 2024 this Saturday, Jan 6 at JinShang Yuan. This time around, they’re bringing the show Escape, which combines improv with playback, for what promises to be a truly one-of-a-kind performance that you don’t want to miss! 

To find out more about the show and just what exactly the concept of combining improv with playback is, we talked to the Beijing Broads’ very own RT. 

Firstly happy New Year! This first Beijing Broads show of 2024 is called “Escape”, can you give us a brief intro on what it will be about?
In many moments of daily life, we escape or tend to escape from the uncomfortable present. Escape can be a sneaky instant way out, however it doesn’t solve any practical problem, it can also be a trigger to a bigger change. Do you want to gaze into our daily struggles and see how much fun along with tearful memories can come out from Beijing Broads’ Improv and Playback night? Perhaps, in those moments, you will feel that we are all one and the same. 

This show involves playback as well as improv, can you explain what each of these involve and what the difference between the two are?
Improv- short for improvisation- is a form of live theatre in which all aspects of the performance are made up on the spot. Playback Theatre is an interactive form of improvisational theatre in which audience members tell stories from their lives and watch them enacted on the spot. Beijing Broads has created their own original theater form to combine Playback with the more comedic improv to co-create laughter and doses of reflection along with the audience.

Can you give us a brief introduction to the current Beijing Broads performers and team?
Staying true to the name, we are still an all female troupe, or a family as we like to refer to ourselves. 
Amazingly, our team remains the same with Ariel, Summer, RT, Xuebi, Sai, Katryn, Saule, Elena and Freey. So there won’t be any new faces for this show that the audience hasn’t enjoyed watching perform before BUT *wink wink* we are starting to recruit new members so if you want to bring your infectious laughter and positive attitude and become one of the broads, we welcome you to try. 

With 2024 having just begun, can you tell us about any of Beijing Broad’s plans for the year? Any surprises up your sleeve?
The coolest thing that will be happening this year for our group is the multiple collaborations we will be doing with other improv groups in Beijing! We have really experienced a high transformation with the amount of learning and practice we’ve put in so now we are more in sync than ever. We always wanted improv to be MORE THAN just a quick laugh and we have invested serious bucks of our own to get coaching from some of the best to bring a new format to Beijing with this show called Escape.
