Join Hopelessly Tatiana To Celebrate and Learn This Black History Month

Last year Tatiana, the creator of the Hopelessly Tatiana podcast, organized a month-long calendar of daily activities, events, discussions and more for Black History Month and she’s back again this year with another jam-packed calendar.

This year’s calendar has daily events with a variety of different themes that range from looking at moments in Black History like the Harlem Renaissance to highlighting books by black authors such as Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale or important Black Movies like the Netflix documentary 13th directed by Ava DuVernay.

Along with looking at black history and culture, there are also “Let’s Talk” discussions that focus on topics such as Colorism or unconscious biases and “Self-Care” days focusing on things like meditation or setting boundaries. To find out more about this year’s events I reached out to Tatiana to ask her a few questions.

Firstly, can you tell us a bit about why you started doing these annual Black History Month events and where the idea came from?
I started doing the Black History Month Calendar because I felt that people around the world would benefit from learning more about American Black History. It’s more than slavery and the Civil Rights movement. We are a people with a rich culture and community, so I want to share that with the world.

Can you tell us a bit more about the discussions and events you have planned?
For this month, we are going to talk about different stages of the Black American Journey. We also have a Black History Month Spoken Word Poetry event planned for the last Sunday of this month (Feb 26)! I’m super excited for the performances. It will be an excellent way to share Black culture with the Beijing Community. More details will be coming soon about that event.

This is the second year you’ve done a month of events for Black History Month, how does this year differ from last year?
Each year the topics change, but the goal is always to raise awareness and be informative. I am planning a few virtual meetings to talk about topics in the calendar and give people a chance ask questions and express themselves more openly.

What do you hope to achieve for this month-long event?
I hope to be informative and to normalize Black Americans as more than former slaves and victims of trauma. As well as provide a space for productive and safe conversations.

Lastly, how can people get involved?
People can get involved by adding my WeChat (ID: tatianamcl) and asking to join the Hopelessly Tatiana group. There they can join the discussions, ask questions, and challenge unconscious biases and stereotypes. Additionally, feel free to attend the Poetry Event! It’s going to be stellar!
