Four Places to Get Soothing Pear Soup in Beijing

For many Beijingers, pears are known as a major healing food in winter. It's believed pears are able to sooth and even heal sniffles and  coughing. Below, we've listed some places in Beijing to get this soothing treat!

小吊梨汤 Xiao Diao Li Tang

Chinese restaurant XiaoDiao Litang has a unique old Beijing vibe. 小吊 Xiǎo diào refers to a small measuring jug that is usually made of copper, while 梨汤 Lí tāng  literally means pear soup. The pear soup served here is famous because it was often served to Peking Opera audiences after performances in the early 20th Century.

Boiled with pear, white fungus and rock sugar, the soup has a pleasant sweetness, and it goes well with the restaurants' many signature dishes including pepper linen ribs and dry fried tofu. The bronze kettle and the old-fashioned glass used to serve the drink also brings an old Beijing feel to diners.

膳梨堂 Shan Li Tang

Shan Li Tang touts its pear soups to be “health in a bowl”, so you can only imagine how nutritious they are. Their signature pear soup contains a large pear, white fungus, wolf berry, and Chinese dates. Every sip is packed with the right amount of the sweetness.

In addition, the place also offers a variety of pear-flavored treats including pear tea, passionfruit and roasted pears, yellow peaches with roasted pears and loquat with roasted pears for diners to choose from.

It is believed that the concept of this place originated from a pharmacy called Deshantang in the Republican period of China. The pharmacy once launched drinks made with traditional Chinese medicines, and among them, pear soup was the most famous. It's said the formula for Shan Li Tang's pear soup is still based on Deshantang's recipe.
