Capital Caff: Three Cafés in Baiziwan & CBD Coffee Fest

Continuing on our journey around the capital in search of coffee, today we turn to the neighborhood of Baiziwan, not too far from Shuangjing and Dawang Lu.

Flannel Coffee

We wrote about Flannel way back when they were a little more temporary shop in the Gongti area. Since then, they’ve not only moved, but they've also expanded to two shops, one in the Xiaoyunnan area and one in Baiziwan. At both locations they serve a menu featuring eight drip pour-over options (RMB 30-45 for cup), plus a selection of specials including, among other things, Vietnamese-style coffee (RMB 35).

Unique Coffee

It might seem bold to name a coffee shop “unique” in a city that’s replete with them, but Unique is actually quite special in that they’ve got an interesting space and a menu with some decidedly different offerings to boot. Chief on the menu is their selection of Australian-style coffees, including a long black (RMB 25 for blend, RMB 30 for Single Origin Espresso) – more or less the Aussie version of an Americano – a smaller variant of that, which they’ve dubbed the “Shlong” (RMB 25 for blend, RMB 30 for SOE), and a flat white (RMB 30 for blend, RMB 35 for SOE).

They also have some nicely named specials, like the A Pineapple Yelling and the Oh Yeahhhh Latte (both starting at RMB 48).

Zaowan

The menu in this new space is relatively simple – Americano, latte, dirty, flat white (all ranging from RMB 28 to RMB 40) – and the space is relatively simple as well. Zaowan makes up for this with an interesting menu of specials and an ample collection of magazines and records. We’ve not seen the alcohol side of the menu, but judging by the DJ station in this place, it’s meant to be popping come nighttime.
