Celebrate April Fools Day with Bad Jokes at CHEERS

Humor is a far more complex matter than some would assume. Not everybody can be a hilarious comedian, and that’s okay. While we may not be able to earn our bread and butter from a comedy stage, we will always have an audience. If you don’t believe me, ask dads worldwide. Also, do you know why I gave up origami? Because it was too much darn paperwork. Groan.

Anyway, Apr 1 is coming —April Fools’ Day, baby! Except I don’t think it’s a holiday we celebrate much? I do remember my hometown’s paper featuring a piece of (intentionally!) fake news every year, but that was about it. Okay, maybe also if you’re teaching English here, as a fun activity for the kids.

The rest of us should take our corniest repertoire of flat ass jokes to CHEERS 齐饮 InStreet, where they’re throwing what is shaping up to be a really fun, silly competition: a Bad Jokes Battle! Free entry, from 8 to 10pm; ideal for some preliminary Friday fun. Wanna hear more? Then read this short’n’sweet interview with Mexican expat and CHEERS’ Events and Marketing Manager Jimena Ortega.

Hey there Jimena! I suppose you may not take place in the competition… care to share your worst joke?
Hey there, pleasure to talk to you! By the way, do your socks have holes in them?

…No? But wait, I-I don’t think you’ve even seen my…
Then how'd you get your feet in them?

Oh my God, haha. So that’s the ammo for your Bad Jokes Battle, right? How does it all work?
We’ve thought of a format where we can have a minimum of four teams with four members each. We’ll be welcoming the teams at none other than our CHEERS Wine Bat at InStreet, in proper fashion of course —with a bottle of wine. Chill, have a drink or two and mingle with your frenemies before the start of this merciless tournament. It’ll be three rounds, each lasting around twenty minutes. You laugh? You lose. Also, you’d be rotating to the next member of your team. It’ll be a chain of fun!

So simple, yet I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this in Beijing! Nice, wholesome fun. How will you choose the winner, though? And what will the prize be?
Easy peasy! When the time’s over, we’ll tally the laughs for each team. It’s worth mentioning that each them should have prepared their own slew of jokes in advance, bringing them on the date either as a phone note or printed. Whatever’s most convenient for you! We’re thinking of short, bad jokes. You mentioned the dad jokes category, but any other will do as long as they fit the bill. The prize for the winning team will be a wonderful selection of our Tussock Jumper wines! Tussock Jumper Wines are also our co-sponsors for the night.

Oh boy, you better brace yourselves for my comedy. I will say it’s not the first time I’ve attended a lively event at CHEERS. It really goes in your name, right? What’s your philosophy?
That’s right, we try to offer all sorts of fun events regularly. After all, CHEERS makes wine drinking fun and affordable, and we love to make our customers smile! This is no empty marketing line —we integrate this spirit in our store design and monthly themes. In short, we want our customers to regard CHEERS as a “home away from home”.

Nice motto. How should prospective contestants sign up?
Just hit me up anytime via WeChat (JimenaOR)! Hope to see you there!

The April Fools Bad Jokes Battle takes place at CHEERS at InStreet on Friday, Apr 1 from 8pm to 10pm. Entry is free.
