Hey folks! Date Night China is holding a survey about how people met their partners in China. If you're in a relationship and have a minute, please help them out!

Putting yourself out there to meet someone at a party can be a little intimidating.  Whether you're with friends or flying solo, it's not always easy to walk into a room of people, see an intriguing stranger across the room, and find a way to connect with them.

But it doesn't need to be intimidating! It can be exciting to meet someone offline and not have to swipe through hundreds of dating profiles to meet someone. You can have a natural interaction right away and see if there's a connection there.

Here are a few steps to follow to boost your confidence and help make your party night a banger - and possibly lead to you getting the WeChat of that someone new.

Step 1: Scope out the room. If you see someone you think is cute, handsome, interesting, etc., flirt a little from a far.

Try to make subtle eye contact. Point your chin down and give him/her a nice smile. Maybe glance their way a few times in the night.

Stand tall and walk with confidence around the room.

Consider the kind of party you're at. The bar is a great place to hang out and meet people. Start a conversation with the bartender if they seem friendly, and see who is around.

If it's a dancing party, you could try to boogie with that person you've been eyeing. BUT make sure it’s respectful. I’m talking to you, men. One too many times I’ve been and seen women be the victim of men that don’t know their boundaries on the dance floor. If we give you signs to back off, BACK OFF.

If you’re shy, it will encourage him/her to come over. If you have enough courage yourself, go up and start a conversation! You can always bring a friend along if you need back up.

Step 2: The Initial Conversation

You’ve been flirting across the room a bit together… now, how to start a conversation? There are several ways you could do this…

Compliment them… but do so carefully! You don’t want to come off as creepy or overbearing. Something simple is usually best, like noticing a stylistic piece to their outfit that they took time to select. Or a hairstyle or something unique and standout.

Make a joke.

Ask them what their favorite color is… or just any random question really.

The key thing to remember here is you already had some attraction, now see if the conversation can flow too! If he/she asks you a question, answer it, but don’t forget to ask them a question in return. Make sure there’s equal time spent talking and learning about one another.

Here’s some good starter questions too:

  • So what brings you here tonight?

  • What’s the best vacation you’ve ever been on?

  • What’s your favorite movie or TV show? What are you binging right now?

  • What do you do for fun?

  • What makes you extremely happy?

Step 3: Ask For That Follow-Up Meet Up

If the chemistry was good, and all things went well, don’t forget to ask for their number or WeChat to continue the conversation at a later date.

Tip: Don't just walk directly up to someone and ask for their WeChat though if you haven't had a chat or made some kind of connection first. Feel the vibe and make a proper introduction.

If you’re with friends at the party, and so are they, it’s reasonable to talk for a little and then separate. Maybe you connect at different parts through the night. Remember that patience is key, no need to rush into it! There will be time to get to know each other later!
