Café de la Poste gets a complete makeover and expanded space

After a couple of months of ups and downs that saw them nearly close due to street renovations on Yonghegong Dajie and then unexpectedly carry on, albeit with a bricked-up entrance accessible only via a wobbly, ditch-spanning plank, Café de la Poste is rising from the ashes with their first full renovation in 13 years. The renovations are set to go on until at least Aug 28 but when they're finished you can expect a lighter, expanded space (they have taken over the next-door bakery) that will also be open during the day. We'll have an update for you when they're finished.

Azur celebrates sister restaurant Mirazur's awards win with special menu

Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing's restaurant Azur's sister restaurant Mirazur (from three Michelin-starred chef Mauro Colagreco) recently took the number one spot at The World's 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2019. To celebrate this special occasion, they have put together a special menu for people in Beijing who want to experience the fresh seasonal ingredients that make the Mirazur experience award-winning.

Signature dishes include Gillardeau No. 2 oysters with a pear reduction followed by a mushroom consommé paired with low-temperature egg and fresh-picked Yunnan mushrooms, crisped herbs, and edible flowers. We were especially impressed with the main course during a recent tasting, which features Wagyu beef tenderloin topped with Kaluga caviar butter, artichokes, and cepes. The menu starts from RMB 1,288 per person including three glasses of wine and is available from now until Dec 31.

Daily deals and updated menu at Gyu Tetsu

Yakiniku restaurant Gyu Tetsu, above the McDonald's on Maizidian, has just updated their menu, adding several new beef cuts as well as desserts and a host of daily deals. A veritable meat lovers paradise, new additions to their already hefty beef-centric menu include a foot-long marinated beef strip, three different cuts of wagyu short rib, and beef bone soup over rice and raw beef. The kitchen has also collaborated with Japanese dessert chain Booth's Cake to create two new shaved ice creations, one strawberry and one mango, that work great after several rounds of rich, barbecued beef. Depending on when you visit, you can save 50 percent off premium short rib (Mondays), thick beef tongue (Tuesdays), skirt steak (Wednesdays), and marinated beef rib strip (Thursdays). Check our review of Gyu Tetsu when it opened here.

BOGOF burgers at Burger Box

Burger Box is celebrating its grand opening with buy-one-get-one burgers all day, every day until Aug 18. Stop by the newly opened Burger Box located on the north side of Nali Patio (right next door to the new Moka Bros) to try one of the eight signature burgers (we were impressed with the fine ingredients – if not the hefty price point – in the Out of the Box burger during a recent visit). With four types of patties: 100 percent Aussie beef, pork, fried chicken or the veggie burger, there is a burger for everyone. If you don't make it over for the buy-one-get-one deal, don't worry, they are offering 12 percent off your bill from Aug 18 to Sep 9.

Anti-Social Mondays (AKA no phone Mondays) return to Caravan

If you struggle to step away from your phone these days (let's face it, who doesn't), Caravan's Monday night deal could be for you. They're inviting you to unplug and definitely not share by offering you 50 percent off your food bill when you turn in your phone at the bar. The offer applies from 6pm onwards and the whole table must take part to be eligible.
