EAT: Round Out Veganuary at The Local and Arrow Factory, Tribe Opens in WF Central, Sunday Brunch at Beersmith
Veganuary may be nearly over but there's no need to give up on your newly-found meat-free dining habits just yet. You've got until tomorrow (Jan 31) to take advantage of Arrow Factory's Meatless Happiness Week, organized in conjunction with local environmentally friendly NGO, GoalBlue. Order any vegetarian or vegan dish, including their jackfruit "pulled pork" sandwich, soy chili, and a Mexican Power Bowl, with an Arrow Factory beer and get an RMB 20 discount. You'll also get a free GoalBlue gift with every purchase. The deals are available at Arrow Factory Liangmahe, Arrow Factor Taproom, and Stuff'd.
The Local is also offering a menu of vegetarian snacks and dishes for RMB 40 each every Monday from 5-10pm. Try the cauliflower buffalo wings – you won't miss the chicken – or the portabello fries with soy-garlic sauce.
Many people stick to Veganuary for the health benefits and when it comes to healthy dining in Beijing, Tribe is often the first place that springs to mind. Luckily for people who frequent the Dongcheng side of town, Tribe's latest Beijing outpost is on the fourth floor of swanky new mall WF Central in Wangfujing (directly across from the comparatively gluttonous gaze of The Cheesecake Factory). It's a cool spot with a style that will be familiar to anyone who's been to another branch of Tribe. They also plan to turn this particular branch into a sort of "lab" for future dishes, so expect them to bring out all sorts of creative new combinations of low calorie, vegan, and/or gluten-free pastries and desserts, along with specialty lattes and other dishes.
Finally, if you've had enough of the very idea of a healthy January, then Beersmith Gastropub's new Sunday roast and brunch (RMB 228, additional RMB 168 for free-flow wine and beer) may just be your best new excuse to slob out on a Sunday. The brunch gives you unfettered access to a carving station (Australian rib of beef, leg of lamb, rotisserie chicken, crispy pork knuckle, and marinated ribs, to name but a few), sides of potato gratin and roasted vegetables, a seasonal starter (French oysters during our visit), as well as a dedicated egg station, and finally, cakes, pastries, and yogurt to tip you over the edge. As if you needed any further excuse not stand up ever again, Beersmith has also extended its happy hour, meaning buy-one-get-one-free on all craft beer, house and sparkling wine, and house spirits between 11am and 9pm.
