Collab Milk Stout From Slow Boat and Great Leap Released in Memory of Sam Cornthwaite

We can never make up for the loss of Sam Cornthwaite, the beloved co-founder of non-profit corporation GoodWorks Coffee & Tea, who passed away suddenly in Beijing on September 6 due to complications from acute pancreatitis.

GoodWorks, whose operations were taken over by General Manager Thomas Crow following Cornthwaite's passing, source their fair trade coffee beans and tea from small farms in Yunnan grown by ethnic minorities. GoodWorks' mission is to offer professional training and jobs in the field of coffee and tea production to at-risk orphans in China. To help with this valiant effort, Cornthwaite’s two favorite Beijing brewpubs – Great Leap Brewing and Slow Boat Brewery – have come together to brew a latte-style milk stout using a cold brew of GoodWorks’ signature blend.

The “Emperor’s Roast” blend, which has elements of “roasted tobacco, chopped walnuts, with a subtle taste that one would expect from a dark roast, freshly roasted specifically for this brew,” Chandler Jurinka, founder and owner of Slow Boat explained. Slovenian general hops were also added to the dry hopping process to give it an aroma of berry. In addition, lactose was used to give it a creamier, latte-esque flavor.

This collab beer (6 percent ABV and 25 IBU) will be ready for sale next week for RMB 50 a pint. RMB 15 of every glass will go directly to GoodWorks. While you're waiting for it to be released, you can head to Jing-A for their Yunnan Coffee Stout, which was also created in collaboration with GoodWorks as part of this year's Maovember charity campaign, with RMB 10 from each pint donated to GoodWorks.

We continue to miss Sam, but are happy to see that his hard work is still helping those in need.
