China's 'Two Meetings' Opens Thursday, Expect Delays, Increased Security

China's two biggest annual political events, the China People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the National People's Congress (NPC), open this Thursday and Saturday, respectively, with traffic delays and increased security likely.

Also known as the liang hui or "two meetings," the CPPCC opens March 3, and the NPC March 5.

This annual legislative session normally lasts 10 days to two weeks. This is important for the average Beijinger because both during the run-up and the actual meetings can mean snarled traffic, especially on Chang'an Jie and the surrounding area and the Airport Expressway, and a general tampdown on nightlife and large-scale entertainment events.

The duration of the meetings is a good time to carry appropriate identification and licenses, including one's passport, dog licenses, and driver licenses, as spot checks will likely increase. Under Chinese law, all foreigners are required to carry their passports with them at all times.
