Get Outside and Enjoy the Fresh Beijing Air with These Outdoor Winter Activities

For anyone who hasn't opened the curtains today: it's gorgeous outside.

We've got clear skies predicted for at least the next few days, so there is no reason to not get out there and enjoy the clean air, if you're lucky enough not to be stuck in an office, that is. Regardless of the temperature, go and explore before we go back to Antarctic-style temperatures and smoggy-as-fudge skies.

Ice Skating
While we wait for the ice to freeze on natural lakes throughout the city, there are many ice skating rinks for you to get your skates on and get practicing. You don't even have to venture far, as the conveniently-located Kempinski Hotel has an ice skating rink practically in their backyard.

Skiing
Nature might sometimes feel far from Beijing, there are plenty of places to enjoy the slopes not too far from the city. Whether you're considering a day trip, or a weekend-long break, there are options for every occasion surrounding our fair city, with slopes for every level of skiier.

Jingshan Park
Jingshan Park is a pretty solid bet on a clear sky day, even in winter. Get your coat on, and go for a refreshing walk through the park the view from the top is always worth the slight climb up the hill. You might even be lucky enough to catch some impromptu KTV sessions among the rock formations.

Biking
This one requires a certain level of determination (or another layer of thermals), but beautiful days are practically begging for you to get out there on your bike. If you don't have a bike you can hire one from a nearby hotel, or you can get some wheels for the day at Natooke.

If you're really hardcore, cycle to Fragrant Hills Park. If you aren't that hardcore, go to the Olympic Forest Park, where there's even a wetlands area reminiscent of Jurassic Park. If you fall somewhere in between i.e. mediocore (or live on the east side of the city), a ride to Panjiayuan Antiques Market is also a pretty good option.

Dine and Drink
If you'd rather not be fully outside but do want to enjoy the view, check out any of these venues up high.

Or Get Out ... Harbin
Escape the city for the weekend and try something even colder: Harbin. This northern city's ice sculpture festival draws hoards and hoards of International media outlets and photographers every year, so why not visit yourself while you're only living six hours away by train.
