Beijing Airport Express Service Disrupted by Fire Monday

[Updated July 28, 8.20am] A fire aboard an Airport Express train has caused disruption in service and required the evacuation of almost 150 passengers, creating delays both on the Airport Express line and rubbernecking delays on the Airport Expressway.

The car was observed at 4.50pm just beyond the Fifth Ring Road, emitting smoke. The fire had broken out around 4.30pm, according to the South China Morning Post. Passengers could be observed inside the train, which had some of its doors open. There were no signs of panic or injuries.

The fire began on the roof of the car and burned through into the compartment. An Airport Express employee extinguished the fire, appropriately, with a fire extinguisher, SCMP reported.

Two fire engines were seen heading towards the site of the car, although access across the fence separating the Airport Express tracks and Airport Expressway would have been difficult. Service has since returned to normal.
