Follow Us On WeChat And Win Free Beer at the Beijinger Anniversary Party!
Please come help us celebrate 12 fine years of the Beijinger with unrestrained pours of booze at Spark next Thursday, October 17!
Twelve, in case you didn't know, is a magical number. You've got your 12 days of Christmas, 12 inches in a foot (if you go by the American measuring system), and 12 months in a year. Then, there's the fact that the human body has 12 cranial nerves, there are 12 function keys on most keyboards, and 12 faces in a card deck. It's been the theme of a shelf's worth of titles (12 Angry Men and Twelfth Night, to name a few). You'll find 12 hues on a color wheel, and Greek mythology recognizes 12 Olympian gods.
Dare I continue?
I dare: There are also 12 issues per year of the Beijinger, and we've been at this for 12 years now. Needless to say, we are reveling in 12's allurement by throwing a birthday bash you won't want to miss. We even took a duodecad's worth of beer to the next level by making the party zodiac-themed. Which could mean this, if we gave a care what you dressed like:
I may or may not indulge in a Scorpio outfit hand-crafted by only the best there is in photoshopped costume design on the internet, but you're free to get creative in a way that reflects however you define the word zodiac, or your own starsign. If that means coming as leather-clad Catherine Zeta-Jones so that you can reenact that scene in Entrapment where she gracefully dodges lasers, then fine (Spark's entrance foyer will certainly meet you halfway with the lasers, but more of that in a moment). I believe we said to be "sparkling" in the event listing, but go ahead and surprise us. There is no dress code, we simply want you to come along and have fun with us.
Speaking of lasers, Spark's are the few lasers in Beijing that I really don't mind shining straight in my face. They make me feel as though there is a treasure waiting for me on the other side. Usually, that treasure is a DJ like Aeroplane, plus drinks at the bar.
Fellas, take note: For once in your life, there will be no overtly sexist ticket pricing system. You just go in there and put down the same amount of cash as the ladies (RMB 200 at the door, RMB 150 before Oct 15). We suggest taking full advantage of this penal discount and getting tickets for your man-friends. Keep the stubs for proof that you made it through Spark's laser labyrinth on a dime. Put them in a shadowbox, hang it on your wall, and gaze at it wistfully next time Lil John rolls into the club.
Because sometimes all that just isn't enough, we are giving away a free pair of tickets to really convince you to come. Just follow us on WeChat (WeChat ID: theBeijinger) before Friday at noon, and we'll pick one of you to be the lucky one. You can follow us by adding our WeChat ID (theBeijinger) or by scanning the QR code below:
By following the Beijinger on WeChat, you'll also receive our practical, useful once-weekly "What's On In Beijing?" roundup of the week's hottest events and new openings. Once a week, that's all. We don't bother you with daily greetings, invitations to dinner or hourly statements of horror at the latest AQI readings from the US Embassy. We don't want to be that guy.
And if you need one last reminder of just how funky the number 12 can be, watch this video.
