Strutting for Charity: Fashion Show Moves to the Renaissance

Dinner extravaganzas featuring fancy fashion shows don’t come around too often. Even more rare is when fashion shows are open to the public at all. This Friday’s Bright Angel Fund Fashion Show breaks all the barriers in the name of charity. Unfortunately, the organizers made a few last-minute changes that anyone interested in attending should be aware of.

The original venue listed in both our magazine listings and our 7-day newsletter was Park 16 in Solana, but due to licensing issues, the evening will now commence at 6.30pm at the Renaissance Beijing Capital Hotel. Hosted by BOCA, the event will consist of a Western BBQ buffet dinner and free-flow drinks, followed by a fashion show and charity auction. All proceeds benefit the Chinese Red Cross Foundation and the Bright Angel Fund, specifically towards improving the quality of education for blind children.

If you buy tickets at the door, the full ticket price is RMB 600 per person (RMB 400 goes directly to charity). We advise you RSVP early by emailing rubyliu416@gmail.com or yychik@yahoo.cn to get in for RMB 500 instead.

Ralf Schuchmann (the designer behind local brand ralfebyralf), who is helping to organize this event, tells us that there is a “T-shape catwalk, so it won’t just feel like a charity event but also a professional fashion show with front-row seating.”

Hong Kong designer Jean Lauie will be parading his latest collection; afterwards, his designs will be auctioned off, along with Emporio Armani’s men’s shoulder bags, jewelry, fine wines and Versace watches.

While we’re not familiar with Jean Lauie’s work, photos tell us his aesthetic is reminiscent of Ann Taylor meets Guess. Take a look. You can also shop online for his designs here.

Great! A night of luxury and indulgence, with excess food and glamour...under the guise of throwing a few pennies to the needy and blind! Why not skip the expensive buffet dining and pretend shopping of a fashion show and just donate the whole RMB 600 directly to Bright Angel Fund? Or is it really about having a glam party in the name of poor and unfortunate people? Or better yet, pay for the food and let those who actually need it get to eat... This is such a bad model (pun intended) for helping people in need. People need to stop thinking these kinds of events are actually part of the solution... I know some people will say doing some thing is better than nothing. That's like saying, I don't really have to care if people starve...if at least I just give them a crumb from my bottomless buffet plate. I shouldn't actually have to do more, right? Wrong.
