Calling All International Students: 3 Days to Donate

With the school semester coming to a close and students flocking home, piles of trash are accumulating outside dorm rooms. Many of these items are in perfectly sound condition, but foreign residents simply don’t have room in their suitcases to bring them home. Project S2S (Student-to-Student) has been collecting these secondhand daily necessities since May 15 in an effort to eventually bring them to migrant schools and communities around the city. Here’s a heads-up that they will stop accepting donations this Friday, June 15. Read on to find out where you can drop off your things before it’s too late, and for other ways you can help.

The Project S2S initiative is being organized by Bridging Education And Mobility, a relatively new non-profit group committed to improving the quality of life for migrant students. According to their press release, BEAM is looking for the following items:

  • Clothing
  • Bedding
  • Cookware (pots, pans, etc.)
  • Kitchen utensils (bowls, plates, cups, etc.)
  • Appliances (hot plates, kettles, heaters, humidifiers, etc.)
  • School supplies (books, dictionaries, notebooks, bags, etc.)

However, please note that they do NOT want any of the above unless they are of good quality and relatively new. They ask that clothing and bedding be washed and folded, while kitchen supplies be clean, undamaged and operational. Repeat: They do not want your garbage. Collection sites include The Bridge Café on Chengfu Lu, Tsinghua, Peking University and Beijing Normal University. You can check Collection Logistics for details.

If you don’t have stuff to contribute, what about your time? This weekend on June 16 and 17 from 10am-5pm, Project S2S is looking for volunteers to meet at Building A of the Tsinghua Science & Technology Park to help sort all the donations for the migrant children. Please contact Irene at beam.alliance@gmail.com if you’re interested. You can find more information on the event here.
