Monster Slip-Up: Why Decimal Points Matter

For all of you who've ever complained to friends and loved ones that it's impossible to find shoes big enough in China, here's China smacking you in the face with a, "You want big shoes?! I'll give you big shoes!"

According to this article on Telegraph.co.uk, a Mr. Tom Boddingham ordered a custom size 14.5 slipper (because his left foot is larger than his right), but due to a "translation error," received instead a size 1,450 slipper. (What I want to know is, did he get it for the same price, because what a steal!)

In the article, Boddingham is quoted as saying, "It was sent directly from Hong Kong and measures 210 x 130 x 65cms - the same length as a grizzly bear or a family car.

"I reckon I must be the owner of the biggest slipper in the world."

We can't say for sure whether this really is a world record slipper, but be on the lookout tomorrow for some real World Records in our upcoming issue.

(And we wouldn't like to see a dog big enough to chew on that slipper, but somehow I wouldn't put it past China to be working on that ... )

ah yes, the ol' PR stunt.

the giveaway really is in the economics of it all, which is why I wondered if anyone ever stopped to collect extra $$$ for a shoe that would require 1000 times as much material (never mind the shipping costs).

PR stunt or not, I'm quite happy just knowing the shoe exists. now, if we could just wipe that smug smile off the face of "tom boddingham," i might be even happier.
