Franks for Nothing: Cheap German Sausages on Gulou

Owned by a German guy and his Chinese wife, this tiny eatery stands out with its bright, ketchup-red frontage and snack-stall menu of meat, fries and beer.

Prices are cheap for Gulou; Thuringer sausage in bread with fries comes in at RMB 18. But (uncharacteristically for a German operation) quality control is where this restaurant falls short.

On my first visit, the owner’s wife grilled up a storm, and we left impressed and satisfied. However, by the time I returned, a passionless lackey had been installed and left to run the place solo – letting the bread go stale, forgetting to season the beef patties, and daubing everything in a gallon of ketchup and mustard.

I hope the owners take the reins again soon. Trying to cost-save so soon might end up costing them dear.

Standout dish: Currywurst, fries
