Yet MORE Music Festivals: FunHill Festival & Modern Sky
Music festivals in Beijing in the summer of 2010 have become almost a weekly routine. According to market economic theory, not all of them will survive, but it seems the competition isn't over yet…
Next week we have FunHill Music Festival from Tuesday, September 21 to Thursday, September 23, with Ian Brown and Mr. Hudson in the lineup. Compared to some other festivals outside of the city, this one is not that painful to get to: The organizer will provide free shuttle buses from a parking lot 50 meters east of the new BTV tower near Guomao going directly to the festival from 1pm to 7pm every day. Return buses start from 6pm. Or you can take the 646 bus from Qianmen and get off at Li Ba Fang (篱笆房).
Of all the festival competitors, Modern Sky has taken the most commercial route while maintaining the quality of their lineups. They brought Suede to China seven years ago right before they broke up, and this year former front man Brett Anderson is coming back. He promises to not only play his solo work but also some old Suede songs on the second day of Modern Sky. Also on the bill are those melancholic Scottish posters Camera Obscura.
As the biggest rock music label in China, Modern Sky is also able to attract premier local talent such as Queen Sea Big Shark, New Pants and Re-tros. Another highlight worth checking out will be the reunion of a bunch of bands active early this decade, like Lure and Hang On The Box.
Modern Sky Music Festival takes place over three days of the National Day Golden Week at Haidian Park, from Saturday October 2 to Monday, October 4.
