Where to watch the World Cup

Chances are that come match times, nearly every television in town (including some rigged up especially for the purpose) will be showing the 2010 FIFA World Cup men’s football matches. Many Internet outlets, including Youku, Sina and CNTV will also have matches available to view online. But to be immersed in the special spirit of football fever (with drink specials) try these venues.

All-Star Sports Bar & Grill
Boasting 65 plasma screens and tons of sound equipment, All-Star supplies sports fanatics with burgers, tacos, pastas and steaks. This night-owl haven has an upscale take on the sports bar formula: plasma screens galore, but the decor has a cool Motown sheen and the cuisine runs from hamburgers to haute. Smooth bar service.

America never fails to export the best of its culture, and there’s no better proof than Hooters. Waitresses in short shorts and tank tops squeal with mandatory enthusiasm while delivering beer and American diner fare. The Beijing branch features less cleavage than do the American counterparts.

The Pomegranate
While the name conjures up images of a delicatessen health bar, this nook in the woods is all about carbo-loading with draft beer and the sports channel. One of the oldest courtyards in this Shunyi hutong, the bar boasts an actual pomegranate tree. 80’s grooves and sharp service accompany an extensive drinks list, including Carlsberg drafts (RMB 20) and classic cocktails (RMB 30). The menu is refreshingly brief – highlights include the quesadillas (RMB 45), the steak and mushroom baguette (RMB 55) and their fabulous French fries.

The Saddle Cantina
The Saddle Cantina’s small ground-floor bar calls to mind this popular Sanlitun watering hole and restaurant’s roots, while the upstairs is a spread-out dining and drinking area. The 50ft retractable roof and the 200sqm outdoor balcony make it prime summer-time bar-estate. The interior resembles a hacienda with timber frames poking out from the roof, and there is a pool table and an onsite microbrewery that produces dark and light beers. The menu features a range of Tex-Mex favorites, DIY chips and guacamole, huevos rancheros, burritos, enchiladas, tacos and even barbecued chuan’r (kebabs). Weekly specials and Friday happy hours keep the regulars coming back for more. Voted “Best Mexican” in the Beijinger’s 2010 Reader Restaurant Awards.

Tun
Live sporting events are digitally displayed on two big screens. Beers start at RMB 20, with mixed drinks from RMB 25 and upwards. This Huxley-brand effort – from the man behind a mini-empire of easy-on-the-wallet drinking spots like Nanjie and Huxley’s – carries on with the tradition of cheap drinks, but ups the decorative ante with fancier fittings in this two floor spot just around the corner from Nanjie within the ever-amusing Courtyard Four compound off of Gongti Beilu. DJs spin tunes from a Great Wall-ish booth on the spacious lower level, while there is more seating on the mezzanine above.

Hey World Cup soccer fans, here's the coolest app I've seen for my iPhone. I'm using it to figure out where to watch the games on TV. It works anywhere in the world. And, I can find fans from every country. I can post my own location and events too!!!!! SOCCER NEAR ME

Boyce has a comprehensive list:

aye, there's the rub. As a veteran crack-of-dawn overseas sports match watcher, there is nothing more frustrating than waking up at 4am, heading off to the pub only to find that they decided not to stay open that morning.

Best to stick with the 24-hour spots.

uhmm very few of those places strike me as good locations to watch games ( i.e dedicated to showing them)

Other than Luga's, pavilion, Paddy and GnD, most of those places will go with the footie as long as it suits them...

For my money, I'm keeping tabs on SAlud, 2 Kolegas, Luga's and PAddy's with G&D as a backup...

the others? no freaking way...

There will also be a raffle of USA and England shirts at Paddy O' Shea's prior to the game. The proceeds from both raffles will go towards the medical bills of a local footballer who was recently injured.

Union have said they'll definitely be open for the USA vs England game at 2.30am on June 12.

They're not planning to stay open for other late games at present, but they say if you have a group for a particular game give them a call and they can probably work something out.

As the opening hours in the list indicate, everyone else is open for the 10pm games - I imagine that as long as there are punters, most will stay open for the 2.30am matches. Best to call ahead for those games though.

Cheers,

Dan Edwards

I think admin is mistaken. Clearly places listed above, such as Frank's Place, Paddy O'Sheas, the Saddle and Tun will be open for the games, even the late ones.

On a side note, I've also heard that England fans are due to gather at 1F where team shirts will be raffled off and there's a special beer deal is going on for England games. Beijing is not a city that turns its light off at 2 am anyhow.

the hours issue is unresolved though ... who's open all night?

none on the list except for the Goose and Duck are 24hr joints, to my knowledge

Hi thezippy,

Check out the match schedule here:
http://www.thebeijinger.com/blog/2010/06/10/FIFA-2010-World-Cup-Schedule

As karlosenrico correctly points out, some games are on at 7.30pm Beijing time.

Given that the earliest matches start at 10pm, is Union staying open beyond its usual 11pm/midnight hours? Otherwise, what's the point of them being a "venue" if you can't catch more than 1/2 a match most nights?
