A Blown-up D-22? Mako Opens on Guangqu Lu

Beijing’s newest concert space lies in the back corner of Hongdian Art Factory, yet another disused industrial yard turned “creative” district. Named after the diminutive sparrow, Mako dwarfs most local music venues with a capacity skirting 500. It’s like a blown-up D-22, with an extra lick of paint and grander sound and lighting rigs.

There’s also a separate theater and, inexplicably, a five-meter-tall Transformer. Good facilities mean little without strong bands or DJs playing – the venue would equally suit Yen-style parties – but Mako has already hosted local favorites like Hanggai.

You’ll drink RMB 20 beers and cocktails at RMB 35-45, including “Long Sex on the Island” – a Long Island iced tea with cranberry juice, as it turns out.

I can't find any upcoming schedules listed on the site, looks like it hasn't been updated since late January. I heard good reports from the Hanggai show on Jan 23, if they have a good band playing you should definitely go down to take a look.
