New Openings: Xiao Che’s Dessert Shop
It’s no surprise these days to find places like this down Beijing’s backstreets. Still, Xiao Che’s is a delightful, refreshing discovery. The tiny restaurant looks like an arty teenage girl’s bedroom. Painted Pac-Man characters munch their way around a fuse box, green renderings of trees sprout from an air conditioner, and photos of pets and an anonymous heroine are clothes-pegged along a piece of string.
Handwritten with colored felt-tip pens, the Chinese-only menu has three main offerings: freshly steamed rice rolls (chang fen) with fillings including beef and barbecued pork; Guangdong-style steamed rice dishes; and, best of all, “double-skinned milk” (shuangpi nai), a comforting custard-style dessert available with various toppings. At RMB 5-13 per dish and RMB 15-18 for set meals, the only concern is overindulgence.
